  1. The position of a player relative to the dealer (or button). Position determines when a player acts in a hand.

Position Names

Button - last player to act after the flop in Texas Hold'em and Omaha Hold'em. The blinds act last after the button pre-flop.
Cut-Off - the position directly to the right of the button.
Small Blind - the position directly to the left of the button. Acts second-last pre-flop, first in all other betting rounds.
Big Blind - the position directly to the left of the small blind. Acts last pre-flop, second in all other betting rounds.
Under the Gun - the position directly to the left of the big blind. Acts first pre-flop.

Importance of Position

Position plays an extremely important role in poker. The later one acts in a hand, the more information he has about what his opponents have done and what their holdings may be. The later a player's position, the more opportunity the player has to control the hand.
