Swings

word type: poker slang

  1. Short term fluctuations in games of chance, encompassing both positive and negative results. A longer-term fluctuation is known as either an "upswing" or a "downswing."

Distinction

The term "swing" can refer to any amount of fluctuation in a gambling situation (rolling a seven on the craps table is a swing), whereas the terms "downswing" and "upswing" usually represent long term results that result from the cumulative, net effect of short-term swings.
