The Worst Day of the Year

word type: poker slang

  1. Expression developed by old-school live poker pros to describe the gut-wrenching feeling of busting out of the WSOP main event.

Not So Bad Anymore

The Poker Term was more relevant when the World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event was one of the few $10,000 buyin events around and easily the most important.

Although the WSOP ME is still the most prestigious and awesome poker tournament in the world, these days there is a poker tournament with a buyin of $10K or more at least every month.

There are also more than 6,000 players who enter the WSOP ME, so it's hard for a rational person like Chris Ferguson to still maintain that busting out the WSOP ME constitutes "the worst day of the year."

Ironic Appropriation

Poker Terms contributor Shane Schleger refers to busting out of the PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up (a weekly event) as "the worst day of the year."
