They Are More Than One Thing

A player who shows up to play the $5/10 NL game at the Commerce five days a week might have several weeks of winning sessions followed by one or several disastrous sessions. This net negative results is known as a downswing.

A tournament player who enters 10 events, cashes for a total of $70,000 but actually has an overall negative result of -$30,000 is also on a downswing.

Any progression of negative results can be classified as a downswing, and they are an unavoidable aspect of poker life.
