Flop a Set

word type: poker slang

  1. To hit a third card of its kind while holding a pocket pair on a flop.

Example

A player holds a pocket pair in their hand, for example, 88. A player in early position raises 4x the big blind and our player with 88 flat calls. The flop comes K-8-2. Our player has flopped a set of 8s for three of a kind.

Odds

The odds of a player flopping a set is 11.8% or roughly 1 in 8.5 (7.5:1 as a ratio).

To achieve this calculation, the odds of each flop card not giving you a set is as follows: (48/50) * (47/49) * (46/48) = 88.2% which is the chance of all three cards not giving you a set. Subtract the 88.2% from 100% and you get 11.8% as the chance of a player flopping a set.
