An accidental string raise is a common mistake by first time live players. The easiest way to avoid this is to announce your intentions before moving any chips. If you are going to raise, say so, and say the amount you are raising. If you are impatient, you can say "raise" and push the calling amount forward before deciding on how much to raise.
