According to Alvarado's player profile page on the PokerStars website, he was inspired to play poker after Greg Raymer won the 2004 WSOP main event. He played online at PokerStars and then scored a handful (6 to be exact) of top 20 finishes of which only two were worth more than $100k in prize money won. Many believe that PokerStars jumped on the first player to separate himself from the pack in the Latin American market in an attempt to put a foothold in the potential player pool that no poker room has a claim currently. According to a popular cash game data-mining site, Alvarado is a woefully losing player at the $2-4, $3-6 and $5-10 No Limit Hold'em levels.

On April 13, 2009, Alvarado won the the PokerStars SCOOP Event #22-M. This event was the mid-stakes Main Event featuring a $1,050 buy-in. The Team PokerStars Pro took 12 hands of heads-up play to win 1st place and the $502,086 first place prize.
