Positional Bet

word type: verb

  1. A bet made due to a player's position in the hand rather than due to the cards the player holds.

Theory

In poker, position means everything in a hand. Having the positional awareness to make a raise when late in a hand is a key skill that even beginning poker players recognize. There are times when a player will not even care what two cards he has been dealt and makes a raise strictly because of the position he or she is in. This is the theory behind a position bet.

Example

In a game of Texas Hold'em you sit in the cut-off and the hand is folded around to you. The read you have on the remaining players is that they are all very tight. Based on your position and without knowing your cards even, you make a raise to 3.5 times the big blind. This is a pure example of a position bet.
