Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino
word type: place/venue
- Harrah's-owned casino located off the Las Vegas Strip which has hosted the World Series of Poker since 2005. Better known as simply The Rio.
World Series of Poker
In 2004, Harrah's purchased Binion's Horseshoe, the long-time home of the WSOP, along with the rights to both the Horseshoe and World Series of Poker brands. 2005 was a sad year for many, as it was the first year that the WSOP was held at the Rio, instead of Binion's. It was all for the best, however, as attendance skyrocketed that year; the Main Event more than doubled in size from 2,576 entrants to 5,619. The final three tables of the Main Event were still contested at Binion's. Every hand of the WSOP has been dealt at The Rio since 2006, making Jamie Gold the first Main Event champion to be crowned at The Rio.
Word to the Wise
If you are going to the WSOP for the first time and are driving to The Rio, park around back at the convention center, rather than in the normal parking garage, to save your feet some walking.
