Dead cards are especially relevant in games of Stud, and players in those games pay attention to exposed dead cards in order to understand the value of their own hand.

For instance, a player who starts with three-to-a-flush in a Stud game will generally know how many other cards of his suit are "dead" in order to evaluate his chances of making the flush. Similarly, if you have a pair, it is crucial to know if the cards that will make you trips or two-pair are "live" or "dead."
