Probe Bet

word type: verb

  1. A small bet into a pot to see where you stand in a hand.

Explained

Often times a player will find themselves in a multi-way pot at the flop and not have any idea where they stand in the hand. The idea behind a "probe bet" is to put a small bet out there to get a sense of what the other players might be thinking.

Example

You have 92 offsuit in the big blind and there are two limpers. You check to see the flop and it comes out 9-J-4 rainbow. You are first to act and throw a 50% of the pot bet out to see where you are and if you second-pair is good. Both players fold, and you win the pot. In this example, the probe bet was to see if anyone hit the J for top pair.
